Let’s see, what catchy slogan to use to emphasize the tremendous benefits that come with putting Hostwinds’ user-friendly Cloud Portal to use? Oh, I know! “You’ll be on cloud 9 after you manage your servers so easily using Hostwinds’ Cloud Portal.” Perfect and not at all trite or corny! Now that we got that out of the way, let me point out that it’s truly remarkable how much you can do with Hostwinds’ Cloud Portal, particularly now that we’ve added some valuable new tools.
Wait, I thought of one more: “Cloud Portal – A Portal to what? Narnia? Nope. If you can believe it, this is the portal to something much better than the enchanting world of Narnia!” Nailed it! It’s obviously a unanimous decision between us that I should start writing catchphrases and slogans as my full-time job, right? While the universe is conspiring to manifest that, let’s walk through the varied series of options available to you as you cruise through the Cloud Portal.
Cloud Portal: The Portal to Ease and Tranquil Productivity
If you haven’t yet experienced the Cloud Portal and all its majesty, it is the interface by which you are able to oversee and manage your servers and web hosting services. Are you ready for your personal tour through the Cloud Portal…fused with some random thoughts and ideas coming from yours truly? Here we go!
“Create” and Other Core Features in the Cloud Portal
So much to explore with so little time. Where to begin? Let’s see…Servers, Network, OoOoOo a spaceship! What a great way to draw attention to the “Create” button. If you are familiar with the Cloud Portal, you might have noticed the new Easter egg in the form of the green button to the top right. The spaceship icon next to Create accurately depicts the out-of-this-world excursion you’ll go on if you decide to inspect the capacious Create capabilities and functions.
Create a Cloud Server
The first in the drop-down list is the “Servers” option, which takes you right to the “Create a Server” page. This Hostwinds Knowledge Base guide goes through the whole server creation procedure and all your options:
Time to roam back to the main page within the Cloud Portal. To do so, simply click the Servers drop-down on the far left of the white navigation bar and select the “My Servers” link.
Back to that shiny and sensational Create button on the top right. Sidenote: In the interest of getting through this tour without you having to spend hours reading, I’ll try my best to not crack a silly joke each time I explain a new feature…although I can already tell that refraining from doing so will be quite difficult. Let me just power through these advantageous tools and give you the facts really quickly before the ocean of puns starts flooding out.
Domain & Firewall
While we’re on the subject of oceans, let’s dive deeper into this server management sea. When you click the Create drop-down button, “Domain” is next in line after Servers. Clicking Domain results in being prompted to type in the domain name in the input field of the friendly pop-up that magically appears on your screen. Simply click the “Add Domain” button and you’re done. It doesn’t get more user-friendly than that!
When you click “Firewall” from the list of drop-downs stemming from the Create button, another easy-to-use pop-up prompts you to fill in the firewall name and description. Click the “Create Firewall” button and you are good to go.
Volume & Snapshot
A volume is a virtual storage system where you can stock and organize your important files. In the Cloud Portal, volumes are sort of like a virtual USB drive where you can store extra data. Add a volume if you wish to add supplementary disk space to your server. Click the “Volume” link within the Create button choices >> select between a wide range of gigabyte storage options >> pick a name >> specify your preferred location >> and click the “Add Volume” button. Sweet and simple.
A snapshot allows you to keep a copy of your server in the state it’s in when you take the snapshot. This is nice because it permits you to come back later and recreate the server exactly as it was in that moment. In fact, you can generate multiple replicas of your server at the moment you took the snapshot. The “Snapshot” drop-down prompts you to select the appropriate server >> choose a name >> and click the “Take Snapshot” button. That’s it!
I am sweating profusely as I run through all these features. Oops, I knew I couldn’t make it through this tour without spewing out a pun.
ISO & Load Balancer
An .ISO file is an image that is usually associated with a disk like a CD or DVD. You can use them to make changes to your operating system. Clicking “ISO” prompts you to write a brief description for your ISO >> input the URL >> click the circular button to the right of the “Bootable” option if you so choose >> determine which location works best for you >> and click the “Add ISO” button.
A load balancer takes your website traffic and spreads it out between multiple servers. This is useful because it ensures your website won’t be overloaded with traffic, so it will always run swimmingly. After clicking “Load Balancer” that appears under ISO, select your preferred billing cycle >> create a quick description for your load balancer >> choose between our Seattle and Dallas locations >> and click the “Create Load Balancer” button. You’ve just efficiently completed something fairly complex.
We just blazed through several features included in the Cloud Portal and still have oodles to talk about. This speaks to the innumerable elements accessible in the Cloud Portal. The Champagne Test
Our team implements the Cloud Portal and all of our products and services for that matter. We only make products and services available to our clients if we would put such products and services to use ourselves. In fact, an eloquently-written blog piece featured on Hostingadvice.com entitled “Founder Peter Holden on the Hostwinds Cloud Platform: An Intuitive Central Management Solution Providing Greater Control Over Hardware Assets” touches on this. Christine Preusler, the author, explains “When attempting to determine the usefulness of a product, you only need to ask one thing of the company manufacturing it: ‘Do you drink your own champagne?’ The question, often used to gauge whether a company has enough confidence in its goods to put them to use internally, can reveal a lot when it comes to product quality. In the case of Hostwinds’ cloud platform, Founder Peter Holden told us the answer is a resounding ‘yes.’” Later in the blog post, the talented author goes on to say “Not only is the platform robust enough for his internal consumption, but it goes above and beyond to cater to even the most novice user.” Christine, you hit the nail on the head!
