Decisions: Networking and the Application Program Interface

Many IT professionals ask themselves the same set of questions when exploring their options as infrastructure and networking changes are needed.
Often, a vital concern stems from the Application Program Interface (API) impact on their network design and purchasing decisions. In an IT Connection article, experienced IT veteran Mike Fratto discusses how information technology decision-makers need to educate themselves about the specific aspects of APIs to make informed choices when proceeding with these investigations.
In this article, Fratto writes, "_In a software-defined data center, APIs will be the defining functions differentiating one product from another._" Fratto punctuates his thoughts by saying, "_In market segments like switching, speeds, and feeds have become a non-issue because networking manufacturers are reaching performance parity fairly quickly…APIs are critical when making a networking purchase because everything else in the data center depends on them._."
