Getting to Know the Hostwinds Family Pt. 2

Magic Lamp

It’s Quote Time: “We don’t read and write poetry because it’s cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race, and the human race is filled with passion.” These sagacious words come from the revered and appreciated Robin Williams.

We led with that quote for two reasons:

1. Robin Williams is mentioned in the ensuing interview. This Robin mention reminded us to honor the legendary comedian by citing him.

2. “Passionate” is definitely an adjective you could use to describe our interviewee as well as each individual comprising the Hostwinds Family.

Hello and welcome back to our “Getting to Know the Hostwinds Family” blog series! Today we will be interviewing Hostwinds’ hilarious PHP developer, Matthew.

Meeting Matthew

In addition to providing straightforward advice and epic humor, Matthew helps to create the plethora of online services we offer our clients. He also dedicates a lot of time and effort into improving our software development team.

Upon meeting Matthew, it quickly becomes clear that he posesses a distinct ability to balance work and fun. Isn’t that the pathway to success in this life? What’s that? Getting too philosophical? Got it.

Now it is time for you to meet Matthew!

Matthew’s Methodologies

Here are the methodical responses Matthew gave to the series of diverse questions we asked him.

1. What is your position at Hostwinds?

Matthew: “I am Hostwinds’ Senior Developer.”

2. What is the funniest random fact you know?

Matthew: “Robin Williams needed to be censored on the show Mork and Mindy in 4 different languages, as he would try to slip curse words past the censors by saying them in foreign languages while using a high pitch voice.”

3. What is the most interesting thing you’ve ever learned about coding?

Matthew: “Early programs up to the mid-1970s were created and stored on punch cards.

4. What is the most interesting thing you’ve ever learned about PHP?

Matthew: “PHP and I share the same birth year.”

5. If you were an animal other than human, what would you be and why?

Matthew: “I would probably be some type of whale or dolphin, as they have vastly different environments, and as a result, vastly different perspectives of the earth.”

6. What is your favorite book and why?

Matthew: “I would say it is Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. I am fascinated by the concept of a virtual reality which is so expansive that it encompasses an infinitely large universe on a technological, programmatic, and metaphysical level. It also incites curiosity about the impact that such a system would have on modern-day society.”

7. If you had to describe the Hostwinds Team in one word, what would that word be?

Matthew: “Diverse. Our team has a wide range of personalities which makes working at Hostwinds very entertaining.”

8. If a movie was made about your life, what would it be called and what actor would play you?

Matthew: Hackers. Jonny Lee Miller.”

9. What is something you think Hostwinds clients should know about the company and/or the services Hostwinds offers?

Matthew: “Hostwinds and its staff continually research trends among clients to constantly improve their experience with the company. A good example is our Billing Director, Gus. He has a massive document of improvements that he is in the process of implementing in order to ensure that our clients’ experience with our Billing Department is as pleasant as possible. Additionally, our Front Lines are always reporting common issues or confusion that they see with clients and make suggestions to ensure that a resolution is implemented to remove the source of confusion.”

10. What is the most random fact about you?

Matthew: “I’m highly addicted to League of Legends.”

11. What is the best part about working for Hostwinds?

Matthew: “The best part about working for Hostwinds is the employees. The development team adds a lot of comedy to the day, which makes the day go by fast.”

12. Who or what inspires you the most?

Matthew:  “I get inspiration from a lot of places. The most frequent source of inspiration, though, is to solve a problem that I or someone else faces. An example: I was inspired by the fact that my father fell asleep on public transportation once which caused him to miss his bus stop. To solve the issue, I wanted to create an Android application that would act as an alarm, and would go off a stop or two before your destination to ensure that you did not miss it.”

As one’s grandma might say, “How about that?”

For anyone who doesn’t understand that expression, it generally means something along the lines of, “cool!”
