If this is your first time tuning in to the ‘Hostwinds for the Holidays’ blog series, you are more than welcome to binge read the previous posts by clicking the links below:

This week’s edition of ‘Hostwinds for the Holidays’ involves creating a holiday-specific subdomain for your website in the Hostwinds Cloud Portal! If you would like to share your holiday pictures, recipes, or deals on a web page that is a bit detached from your main site, a subdomain is a great option. Hostwinds’ industrious Cloud Portal makes it easy to give your website special touches like this.

What is a Subdomain?

It can sometimes be a little tricky to differentiate between a subdomain, an addon domain, a subdirectory, and all the other terms associated with website domains.

Here’s a subdomain definition provided by a previous Hostwinds blog piece entitled “Square One Fundamentals: Domains, Subdomains, Addon Domains, & More” to help clear up any confusion:

“A subdomain is basically the domain for a completely new website, but you don’t need to register for the subdomain.”

Here’s some more subdomain clarification that happens to come from the same blog post:

“Subdomains are a means to clean up your site URL by adding a prefix to your domain name. For instance, you could tac on the hypothetical subdomain ‘blog’ to your hypothetical domain name ‘myhypotheticaldomainname.com’ and it would appear as:

blog.myhypotheticaldomainname.com

This is a nice way to organize your URL if you have various web pages within your site.”

What’s that? We’ve driven the point home already, and you don’t need any more clarification about subdomains? Got it.

Oops, we couldn’t help it! One more subdomain definition just for fun:

“A subdomain is a way to have a secondary server or service running on a domain. It can be another website that contains its own unique content without an entirely new domain needed to be created. Alternatively, it can be another service entirely, like mail.example.com or blog.example.com.”

Now that we’ve got the definition of a subdomain down pat, it’s time to learn how to create a free holiday subdomain in the Hostwinds Cloud Portal. Here we go!

How to Add a Holiday Subdomain

Follow these 8 easy steps to add a holiday subdomain:

Navigate to Cloud Portal

#3: Click on the ‘NETWORK’ drop-down menu. >> Click ‘Domains.’

Click 'NETWORK' >> Click 'Domains'

#5: Click on the drop-down menu to the left of the page. >> Click either ‘A’ or ‘CNAME.’

How do you know whether to select ‘A’ or ‘CNAME,’ you ask?

Our “How to Add a Subdomain to the Hostwinds Cloud DNS Manager” guide has the answer!

“If the subdomain is hosted on the same IP address as the domain, a CNAME record can be used pointing it to the main domain name.”

CNAME Record

“If the subdomain is hosted on a different IP, an A record will be used to point it to the other IP address.”

#6: Look to the right of the drop-down menu mentioned in step #5. >> Type your subdomain name in the input box. Might we suggest ‘holiday’ or ‘holidaycheer’ for your holiday-themed subdomain?

Type in Subdomain

#7: Move to the right, then type in either your domain name (if you chose a CNAME record) or your new IP address (if you chose an A record).

Type in Domain or IP Address

#8: Skip the next drop-down menu (because it can be left at 3600), and click the blue ‘Add’ button!

Click the Blue 'Add' Button

Boom! You got yourself a holiday-themed subdomain.

Holiday Cheer

Spread more holiday cheer today by adding a festive touch to your website! According to Hostwinds Support Team Agent, Chris, the good news about subdomains is:

“If you own the domain, you can create as many subdomains as you want at no extra charge.”

Great point, Chris!

Enjoy the rest of the holiday season, dear friends. Happy Holidays from all of us here at Hostwinds!
