May’s spotlight is here! Our monthly service spotlight blog posts are part of a series to help keep you up to date with new happenings at Hostwinds. If you missed last month’s, which detailed recent additions to domain management, you can find it here.
This month, we’re introducing you to new features that make managing your rDNS easier.
What is rDNS?
rDNS is a reverse DNS check. When email is received, it checks to see what nameserver and domain is associated with the IP of the email sender. Most ISPs and email hosting providers will perform an rDNS check for all incoming email.
It’s a vital part of any email marketing you might do. Why? It’lll help deliver your messages to the inbox of your intended audience. It ranks right up there with having SPF and DKIM in place.
Without it, you’re very much risking the deliverability of your email. You’re also putting your IP at risk of being blacklisted.
rDNS is how your emails are verified to truly be coming from you. It’s similar to how you might do a DNS search to find the DNS info of a website or IP. Except it’s backwards.
When your email is received, that server will (almost certainly) do an rDNS check to make sure you are who your email says you are. It compares the IP you’re sending from and the domain and email address you’re sending from to verify that they are indeed assigned to each other.
If it finds that the IP isn’t associated with the domain of the sending email address, there’s a good chance it won’t accept it. And the intended recipient will never see it, because the server says “Nope, no good, probably a scammer… and you aren’t getting through”
If your email is allowed through, it’s probably coincidence or giving you the benefit of doubt… for now. Continue sending without proper rDNS setup and it probably won’t take long before your emails start getting blocked.
New Hostwinds rDNS Management Features
If you’re a Hostwinds client, you have easy access to your rDNS information and can change it anytime you want. No support tickets or anything needed.
All you have to do is log into your account, use the drop down menu for domains and select the Manage rDNS option. Here you can see a list of all your rDNS records and easily change them.
Have lots of rDNS records that need added or changed? There’s now even an option to do bulk management of your records. So you don’t have to sit and tediously go through them one by one.
If you’d like a step by step, visual guide to help you with these new features, see our rDNS setup guide here.
rDNS management is an important part of email deliverability and these new tools should make keeping them up to date easier (if you’re a Hostwinds client). If you’re looking for other tips for making sure your emails hit the inbox, check out this post specifically for email deliverability.
