WordPress makes running a site easy, but managing databases and files by hand isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Luckily there are plenty of WP backup plugins available that make it easy to ensure you always have a current backup ready to go if you need it. Here we’ll take a quick look at some of the more popular ones, starting with the free ones.
WP DB Backup (Free)
WP DB Backup is an extremely popular (and free) plugin with over 400,000 active installs. It’s pretty easy to create automatic database backups and to restore them when needed. However, it only backs up the databases. It won’t backup your media files, images, etc.
WP Time Capsule (Free)
This plugin hasn’t received much attention and has far less active installs than most of the popular ones. But it’s definitely worth mentioning. Especially for shared hosting accounts or servers where resource management is a concern. This is due to the way your backups are created.
WP Time Capsule uses incremental backups. When you make changes to your site, it’s only those changes that are backed up vs backing up your entire site – again. Which means you don’t end up with 20 enormous backup files being zipped and stored – of mostly the same stuff.
VaultPress offers this, too. But it isn’t free. So does BlogVault, but probably only in the paid version.
BackWPup (Free and Premium)
Another popular and free plugin is BackWPup, with over 500,000 active installs. It also can automatically send your backups to Dropbox or Amazon S3, among others. You can also have them FTP’d to your preferred location. If you upgrade to their premium version you can also have them sent to Amazon Glacier or Google Drive.
Bonus? You can also use it to check, optimize and repair your databases.
UpdraftPlus (Free and Premium)
The most popular among free backup plugins with over a million active installs and an impressive 4.8 out of 5 stars. You can do backups whenever you want and/or schedule them for automatic backups. It can do complete backups of your site or you can pick and choose certain files that you want backed up. The backups can be sent to Google Drive, Amazon S3, Dropbox or FTP’d/emailed where you want them to go.
While it’s free, they also have a premium version. The premium version gives you priority support, a function to search and replace within your database, tools for cloning and migrating your site, encryption of sensitive information in your database and more.
Duplicator (Free and Premium)
This is another one of the WP backup plugins that comes in both a free version and premium version, with nearly 1 million active installs. It’s powerful, but if you’re brand new to WP or don’t have much technical know-how then it might not be the right one for you.
You can perform backups, copy/clone your site for easier migration, to work on your site locally or if you simply want a second fully-functional version of your site ready to go in case something happens to your site.
The Pro version, with the lowest tier available being a personal license for three sites at $39, allows you to:
- Schedule backups
- Send backups to Dropbox, Amazon S3, Google Drive or FTP them
- Multi-threaded and Multisite support
- Create databases or connect to cPanel directly inside the installer
- Get email notifications
Backup WordPress (Free and Premium)
This plugin, again, comes in a free and pro version. The free version allows you to perform full backups that include databases and your files/folders (You can also choose not to includ files/folders).
The backups are stored in your wp-content folder and can be emailed to you. But if you want them to be safely stored away somewhere in the cloud, you’ll need to upload them yourself or purchase a pro version that enables automatic distribution to your preferred location.
It isn’t a resource hog, meaning if you’re on shared hosting this might be a backup plugin to consider using. And there’s no tedious setup required.
Note: It requires PHP version 5.3.2 or later to run.
This plugin allows free weekly backups, but if you want backups more often (say, daily) then you’ll need to upgrade to one of the premium plans. You won’t find the free service option on their website, but if you download and install the plugin from the official WP plugin directory, you’ll see the option for enabling it.

myRepono (Premium, Currently Offers Free Credit to Start)
myRepono is a backup plugin that integrates with an online, web-based management service. As of right now, you can start using it for free and are given $5 in credits to get you started with their pay-as-you-go service. They claim the service costs as little as a couple of cents per day, so that $5 could go quite a ways.
There are many features and benefits to myRepono, some of which include:
- Backup everything including files and databases
- Ability to pick and choose specific databases or mySQL tables to backup
- Files are securely transmitted, stored and encrypted
- Enhanced compression dramatically reduces the backup file size
- Choose daily, weekly, monthly or even hourly backups
- Choose to restore everything or select files
- View or download backups from the web management interface when it’s convenient for you
VaultPress, a part of JetPack, starts at $3.50 per month or $39 per year at the most basic level. Higher tiers provide more features, but even with the basic personal plan you get the features below in addition to just being able to do site backups. The downside is it’s not a one-time purchase. If you have multiple sites the cost can easily become too much, especially if you’re just starting out. You have to also have or create a WordPress.com account and JetPack account.

Backup Buddy (Premium)
BackupBuddy is a great tool, but it’s far from free. While it doesn’t have a monthly fee like some services, which is great, it has a pretty high price tag at $80 for the lowest tier (supports one site). If you have multiple sites, you’re looking at even more.
You can have your backups automatically be sent to Amazon S3, Dropbox, FTP’d to a server or emailed to you. They also have their own cloud service that it’s compatible with called Stash. Not only is it good for backups, but it’s handy if you ever need to move or copy a site.
There are many more WP backup plugins and services out there, as well. But no matter what you decide to use, just make sure you’re taking regular backups and storing them somewhere other than on your server.
