A couple weeks ago we did a guide for allowing temporary admin access to your WordPress site, which certainly can come in handy. But what if you just want someone to be able to read your post before it’s published? Maybe they want to verify a quote of theirs you’re using. Maybe your client needs to see what you’ve written before the rest of the world sees it. Or maybe there are several people who need to see the post.
You don’t have to give them admin access just to do that. Why take the chance of someone messing around in there and accidentally breaking something or creating multiple accounts just so one post can be accessed?
That’s where today’s WordPress Plugin Preview will help. The plugin we’re looking at is Public Post Preview, which currently has over 20,000 installs and a 5-star rating. It will let you give a link to someone that lets them instantly preview your post.
It’s easier for them, as they don’t have to worry about logging in or finding the right post. And you don’t have to worry about managing another user in your admin area or deleting that user once they’re done.
How it works
First, search plugins inside your Plugins section for Public Post Preview (or download and manually install it from the official WordPress plugins here). Activate it. Now whenever you create a post that you want to pass off for review before publishing, save the post as a draft.
When you first create the post, you won’t see anything different until you save the draft. See below… nothing different shows in the post editor yet:
But after you save the draft, you’ll see the new section in the publish box right above the publish button. Check the box to enable it for this post and save again. Now it’ll give you a URL you can give out so others can access the post immediately, with no need to login (See below – the post was saved, then the section appears. This is what you see after saving again to generate the shareable URL).
I like to go ahead and save again now just to be 100% sure the new, shareable URL sticks and is saved.
Note: This URL will work for 48 hours. If you want to change the length of time it’ll work, you can also use this plugin: Public Post Preview Configurator
Having to use a plugin or workaround for this is sort of a pet peeve of mine with WordPress. It’d be nice if there was an option to be able to do this safely within WordPress itself. Do you have any little things that annoys you with WordPress? Please share.
Do you use another method of getting this done? We’d love to hear that too!
