What is a Cloud Instance?
Cloud Instances are VPSs (Virtual Private Servers) on the Hostwinds’ Cloud platform. These instances are virtualized within our Cloud platform using enterprise drives and hardware for the dedicated resources your instance utilizes.
Cloud Instances can be quickly spun up in just a few clicks of your mouse and can be customized to tailor to your needs.
Which Products are Considered a Cloud Instance?
All of the following Hostwinds plans fall into the Cloud Instance category:
- SSD Cloud (1-10) / Unmanaged SSD Cloud (1-10)
- HDD Cloud (1-10) / Unmanaged HDD Cloud (1-10)
- SSD Custom Cloud / Unmanaged SSD Custom Cloud
- HDD Custom Cloud / Unmanaged HDD Custom Cloud
What are the Differences Between these Products?
Cloud offerings are provided in template-backed tiers of preset resource allocations (RAM, CPU Cores, Disk Space, Bandwidth). Tiers range from 1-10. The entry level tier (tier 1) has the lowest amount of allocated resources. And the highest tier (tier 10) has the most.
Template-backed tiers are a cheaper alternative to our Custom Cloud offerings and are generally the best choice in terms of affordability and the resources provided.
You can upgrade your tier at any time from your Cloud Control panel. You can choose from upgrading to a higher template-backed tier choose to go with a Custom Cloud instance.
We offer these tiers in both HDD and SSD cloud offerings.
If you require more explicit amounts of resources that don’t follow the template-backed structure, you should look into our Custom Cloud instance offerings.
Custom Cloud offerings are for users who have very specific requirements in terms of an instance’s resources. With a Custom Cloud instance, you can choose exactly what you need.
This could result in a server with 30GB of disk space, 16CPU Cores and 32GB of RAM. It’s completely up to you and your requirements for the instance.
You can move to a Template-backed tier from your Custom Cloud instance at anytime through your Cloud Control panel.
Hostwinds offers two tiers of support overall: Fully Managed and Unmanaged. The unmanaged cloud offerings are at a reduced price, as they receive zero support assistance from Hostwinds staff. These instances are reserved for users who are very knowledgeable in the Operating System they’ve selected. If you choose to go this route, you need to be capable of self-supporting any issues you encounter.
The minimum/maximum resources available for our template-backed tiers are listed below:

- Disk Space: 20GB-500GB
- Bandwidth: 1TB-9TB
- Port Speed: 1Gbps

All of our cloud offerings are capable of being billed on an hourly basis. If you’re not certain how long you’ll require an instance, or perhaps you just want to try something out really quickly, hourly billed instances are perfect for you.
The instance will be spun up once ordered and you’ll only be billed for your actual usage. Once you’ve terminated the instance, you’ll no longer be billed.
What Comes with My Instance?
All Cloud instances come with full root (Linux)/administrator(Windows) control of the instance. You have the option of installing, modifying and tweaking any aspect of your server.
You’re also given administrative tools to manage your server at a higher level through your Cloud Control panel.

There are a number of available, additional addons you can order for your server. These include:
Basic Server Monitoring
Monitoring service that is highly customizable and submits a support ticket on your behalf when your service fails a check/test. This allows our support technicians to review and resolve the issue without your interaction being required.
Our monitoring service is highly recommended if you’re running system critical services on your instance.
Our Cloud Backups service lets you customize what’s backed up, when it’s backed up and how long it’s retained for. You do all this right from your control panel. You’ll be able to perform restores themselves and manage your data retention with ease.
WindSpeed is recommended if you’re running a web server and want to ensure that the services are as optimized as possible. Our support technicians will review your current running services and assist in analyzing and optimizing your website’s speed.
WindShield allows our support technicians to review and perform a security audit on your instance. They’ll configure firewall policies and harden your server to assist in preventing possible server compromise.
DDoS Protected IPs
Our DDoS protected IPs allow your server to withstand possible network attacks and filter the malicious traffic. This will help keep your website/server online. You have complete control of your DDoS protected IPs. You can manage both the filter status and Layer 7 filtering.
Does Hostwinds Offer Site Migrations?
Yes! We offer website migrations for unmanaged cloud instances during their initial 30 days of service, and fully managed cloud instances. Once you’ve ordered your server, submit a support ticket requesting a website migration. You’ll need to provide us with your previous hosting details (Hosting package logins) and our support staff will perform the following:
- Fully migrate your account to your Hostwinds service
- Test locally to ensure that the migration was completed successfully and without any errors
- Update you once completed, confirming it’s safe to switch your nameservers over to your new hosting package
