What Is A Cloud Server?

Cloud Servers are VPSs (Virtual Private Servers) on the Hostwinds’ Cloud platform. These servers are virtualized within our Cloud platform using Enterprise drives and hardware for the dedicated resources your server utilizes.

Cloud servers can be quickly created in just a few clicks of your mouse and can be customized to tailor to your needs. We are always improving our services that we offer to make this very easy for all of our clients.

Which Products Are Considered A Cloud Server?

All of the following Hostwinds plans fall into the Cloud Server category:

  • SSD Cloud / Unmanaged SSD Cloud

What Are The Differences Between These Products?

Template-Backed Options:

Cloud offerings are provided in template-backed options of preset resource allocations (RAM, CPU Cores, Disk Space, Bandwidth). Options range from 1-10. The entry-level option (option 1) has the lowest amount of allocated resources. And the highest option (option 10) has the most.

Example of our Managed Linux Options, highlighting CPU, RAM, Disk Space in GB and Bandwidth, found here

Template-backed options are a cheaper alternative to our Custom Cloud offerings and are generally the best choice in terms of affordability and the resources provided.

You can upgrade your level at any time from your Cloud Control Panel. You can choose from upgrading to a higher template-backed option to go with a Custom Cloud server.

We offer these options in SSD cloud offerings.

The only individual resource that can be added without upgrading to the next option is a volume.  Once a volume is purchased, it can be added/mounted and partitioned to your server.

Unmanaged Cloud:

Hostwinds offers two tiers of support overall: Fully Managed and UnManaged. The Unmanaged cloud offerings are at a reduced price, as they receive zero support assistance from Hostwinds staff. These servers are best for Hostwinds clients who are very knowledgeable in the Operating System they’ve selected. If you choose to go this route, you need to be capable of self-supporting any issues you encounter.

Unmanaged services can be upgraded to manage at anytime through your Cloud Control Panel.  For further information, please review: How To Upgrade Unmanaged To Managed.

Technical Specs

Template-Backed Options:

The minimum/maximum resources available for our template-backed options are listed below:

  • CPU Cores: 1 – 16
  • RAM: 1GB – 96GB
  • Disk Space: 30GB – 750GB
  • Bandwidth: 1TB – 9TB
  • Port Speed: 1Gbps

Hourly Servers

All of our cloud offerings are capable of being billed on an hourly basis. If you’re not certain how long you’ll require a server, or perhaps you just want to try something out really quickly, hourly billed servers are perfect for you.

The server will be spun up once ordered and you’ll only be billed for your actual usage. Once you destroy the server, you’ll no longer be billed.

Available Addons

There are a number of available, additional addons you can order for your server. These include:

Basic Server Monitoring

Monitoring service that is highly customizable and submits a support ticket on your behalf when your service fails a check/test. This allows our support technicians to review and resolve the issue without your interaction being required.

Our monitoring service is highly recommended if you’re running system critical services on your server.  For further review, please see:  Monitoring Service Overview.

Cloud Backups

Our Cloud Backups service lets you customize what’s backed up, when it’s backed up and how long it’s retained for. You can do this from the backup configuration file at any time. You’ll be able to perform restores themselves and manage your data retention with ease.  For further review of our Cloud Backups, please review: Web Hosting Cloud Backups.

They’ll configure firewall policies and harden your server to assist in preventing possible server compromise.  For further review of our WindShield application, please review:  Windshield Server Security Service.

DDoS Protected IPs

Our DDoS protected IPs allow your server to withstand possible network attacks and filter the malicious traffic. This will help keep your website/server online. You have complete control of your DDoS protected IPs. You can manage both the filter status and Layer 7 filtering.  For further review of our DDOS protection, please review:  DDoS Protection Overview.

Does Hostwinds Offer Site Migrations?

Yes! We offer website migrations for unmanaged cloud servers during their initial 30 days of service, and fully managed cloud servers. Once you’ve ordered your server, submit a support ticket requesting a website migration. You’ll need to provide us with your previous hosting details (Hosting package logins) and our support staff will perform the following:

  • Fully migrate your account to your Hostwinds service
  • Test locally to ensure that the migration was completed successfully and without any errors
  • Update you once completed, confirming it’s safe to switch your nameservers over to your new hosting package

Not sure how to update your nameservers? Let us know! We can do it for you if your domain is already registered with Hostwinds. If not, simply provide us with your registrar’s login details and our support staff can perform this change for you.
