Hostwinds provides an assortment of Operating Systems to choose from and scripted application installs. Located in our Cloud Portal are the tools you need to customize your server to fit your needs.
In this guide, we take a closer look at what it takes to get you started with a CentOS 6 SSD VPS.
After that, we are going to take a look at how to reinstall an existing VPS with CentOS 6.
The final thing we will talk about are tips to access the server for the first time. We are going to be doing everything from the Hostwinds Cloud Portal.
To get there, hover over “Cloud Control” from the client area and click “Cloud Control” from the drop-down.
Creating a New Server:
Step 1: In the cloud portal, click the green Create button to pull up a drop-down and select Servers
Step 2: Make sure you have the Operating System tab selected and click the down arrow on CentOS to select CentOS 6.
Step 3: Scroll down and select your plan and whether or not this server will be Managed or UnManaged.

Continuing down, you can select your billing cycle, location and even the quantity of servers you want to create.
Step 4: Once you have selected all your options, you can click the Create Server button located at the bottom of this page.
A pop-up window will appear with the invoice that needs to be paid in order for the server(s) to be made available to you. Before paying for the service, we encourage you to review our Terms of Service and our Refund Policy.
Reinstall from Existing Server:
Step 1: From the Hostwinds Cloud Portal, select the Actions drop-down to the right of the server you wish to reinstall the OS and click Reinstall
Step 2: Make sure you have the Operating System tab selected and click the down arrow on CentOS to select CentOS 6 and click Confirm
The server will now reinstall itself and just takes a few minutes.
Accessing the Server for the First Time:
From your Cloud Portal, you can select the name of your CentOS 6 VPS to bring up its details to see your Server Overview page.
What you can do here is to copy the password so you can change the password to your server to what is supplied in the Cloud Portal.
First, you can click View Password and click the button that appears to copy the password to our clipboard.
Then you can click Change password
Next, paste the contents of your clipboard into the password field and in the next field to confirm your new server password.
Alternatively, you can set your own password here if you wish.
Now we need to restart your server in order for the change to occur. At this point, as soon as the VPS finishes booting, you can access your VPS through SSH.
