Installing CentOS 7 + cPanel / WHM (SSD VPS)

Hostwinds provides an assortment of Operating Systems to choose from and scripted application installs. Located in our Cloud Portal are the tools you need to customize your server to your needs. Here we take a closer look at what it takes to start a CentOS 7 with cPanel/ WHM VPS quickly.

After that, we are going to take a look at how to reinstall an existing VPS with CentOS 7 with cPanel/ WHM.

The last thing we will cover is how to obtain and configure the cPanel license for the VPS.

We are going to be doing everything from our Cloud Portal. To get there from your Client Area, hover over “Cloud Control” and click Cloud Portal from the drop down.

Creating A New Server:

Step 1: In your Cloud Portal, click the green Create Button to pull up a drop down and select Servers

Step 2: Make sure you have the Operating System tab selected and click cPanel CentOS 7 with cPanel / WHM.

Step 3: Scroll down and select your plan and whether or not this server will be Managed or Unmanaged.

The difference between Managed and Unmanaged is outlined in our Tiers of Support guide.

It is possible to upgrade your server to Managed and/or increase resources at any time.

Continuing down, you can select your billing cycle, location and even how many servers you want to create.

Step 4: Once you have selected all your options, you can click the Create Server button located at the bottom of this page.

A pop-up window will appear with the invoice that needs to be paid in order for the server(s) to be made available to you.

Reinstall From Existing Server:

Step 1: From the Cloud Portal, select the Actions drop-down of the server you wish to reinstall the OS and click Reinstall

Step 2: Make sure you have the Operating System tab selected and click the CentOS 7 with cPanel/ WHM icon and click Confirm

The server will now reinstall itself and just takes a few minutes.

Before reinstalling your server, we highly recommend taking a backup of any data or creating a snapshot of your server in case you need to restore any data. Reinstallilng your server will overwrite all files and data and should be used with caution.

Getting your License and Configuring it:

Congratulations! You have installed cPanel on an SSD Cloud and are almost ready to start using it. We now need to get a license for cPanel and assign it to the server as well as update the configuration of the server to detect the license.

These next steps will start in the Client Area, which you can access by clicking the icon at the top of the Cloud Portal.

Step 1: Click the Services drop-down located at the top left-hand side and select View Available Addons

Step 2: Select “Order Now” on the cPanel VPS License.

Step 3: With the license obtained, we need to now assign it to the VPS by the main IP address.

You can view the main IP address back in the Cloud Portal. Back in the Client Area, we need to click on the Manage button next to the cPanel license.

From here, we will select the Change IP Address option

Then, you can add the IP address of the server you want to assign the license to.

Step 4: Now that the license is assigned to the server, you can update the server to detect the license.

In order to do this, you will want to SSH into the server.

Once logged in as root, you can issue a single command to the server:

Now, restart the Cloud SSD and you are ready to access WHM and build your sites!
