Cloud Backups Retention

Here at Hostwinds we value your data just as much as you do, which is why we do our best to strive to provide you with easy-to-use and configure systems for backups. Our Cloud Backups on VPS and Dedicated server retain changes to your data for a rolling 60-day period by default. As not all solutions require 60-day worth of data changes to be tracked, this article will assist in modifying that retention period.

Linux

Hostwinds clients have the ability to adjust the data retention period by updating a single file. To modify the Cloud Backup retention period, you will need to log into the server via SSH as the root user.

The file’s location is

/root/.restic_var

The line that you can modify is shown below:

export BACKUP_RETENTION=60

60, is equal to 60 days, so updating the value to 30, would have a 30 day retention period.

Windows

Log into your Windows VPS as Administrator, and navigate to C:WindowsSystem32. Scroll down or search for

restic_repo.ps1

Edit the last line in the file to change the number of days of backups to retain:

$env:BACKUP_RETENTION="60"

If you have any questions about how to do this, or need any help, our Support Team is available 24/7/365 to assist you.
